      Disposition:

Fate’s Roulette: Sayo was dealt a poor hand by fate. As an infant she was thrown off a cliff by a foster mother that hadn't wanted her. She survived, but because of the nature of her injury the “son” of the Ushiromiya family was raised as a girl. She was sent away to an orphanage where she was taught that she was a burden on society, and ended up becoming a maid who lived in the Ushiromiya house from an early age without friends and bullied by her peers. She unknowingly fell in love with three of her cousins, one of whom, Battler, jokingly promised to take her away before leaving the family for six years. Finally she learned the truth of her body, her birth (the result of incestuous abuse), and that much of her life circumstances had been the result of manipulation and deceit by her fathers servants, to get her to forgive him in place of her mother.

Therefore, for all her life, she has tended to believe that she was at a mercy of the whims of fate, and that her actions do not truly matter. She became an exceedingly passive person without the backbone to stand up for herself and make difficult decisions. Gradually she developed a new way of thinking: spinning the wheel of fate herself. When she is indecisive about a major decision, she will initiate events that could provide a number of outcomes, giving her all to the result she receives. Even so, sometimes she simply wants things enough to “defy fate” and seize them for herself. Which of these tendencies she falls into depends on how hard she wants an intended result, and how confident she feels in that desire.

Deep down, she knows that there is no roulette. It’s a coping mechanism for her indecisiveness and difficulty understanding her desires.

Identity Crisis: Sayo’s uncertainties extend to her identity and personhood. Since she was young, she has tended to create “friends” for herself in her mind. This later extended into a tendency to compartmentalize parts of herself, her desires, her feelings, or ideals she wants to embody into separate “personas.” These aren’t separate personalities— she considers herself one person, and yet many. It’s not as likely to come up as often in Noctium, where she has committed to the identity of Beatrice, but she will still refer to her witch and human identities as if they were separate people.

This crisis of identity heightened in her adolescence, when she started to notice that her body was not developing as a “normal” girl’s would and began to hate herself and her body due to gender dysphoria. She developed uncertainty about whether she was male or female, and even who she was on a basic level. She then had a complete psychological breakdown upon learning the truths mentioned above. After this she begins to dehumanize herself as “furniture,” a subhuman being unworthy of love or even personhood.

The Golden Witch: At this point, Sayo develops a persona that abandons her human self entirely; the Golden Witch Beatrice, a sort of ghost story character among the Ushiromiya family and the staff that works at the manor. Pushed to the brink by hate and despair, she plots a murder/suicide of the Ushiromiya family and the servants responsible for her fate. After dying in the incident, she exists as a true witch on a higher plane of existence, challenging Battler to a game to uncover the truth of her crime as well as of her own identity.

Beatrice is confident, brash, and uninhibited. She speaks in a haughty, aristocratic manner that falls slightly short of convincing, not least because of her tendency towards vulgarity and even childish sulking at times. She talks cheerfully about dark topics like murder and torture, or about esoteric occult knowledge (that was almost entirely just made up by herself and her nine year old cousin Maria).

Beato is remorseful of her crimes, and even has a kind and gentle side. She loves with ferocious intensity, and takes a pure, innocent glee in things that she thinks are fun. But she can also be brutal, terrifying and sadistic to those who stand in her way or earn her wrath.

She is a chaotic gremlin of a girl. A fanatic for mystery novels, Beato has enjoyed playing pranks and tricks on people from a young age. It was a way for her to maintain a bare shred of power in her circumstances. She loves teasing, provoking, or otherwise getting a rise out of people, even if she’s vulnerable to getting flustered herself. In a real sense, the mystery she created out of the Rokkenjima Massacre was the pinnacle of her trickster career.

Suitability: Beatrice arrives in Noctium just after completing her game with Battler, who has finally understood the truth about her, and joined in marriage. In this sense she is quite happy. But she would initially be less than happy about being separated from him. Furthermore because of her remorse for instigating the Rokkenjima Massacre, over which she commited suicide, she is uncertain that she has the right to just live again. She has desired to simply rest in peace since concluding her game.

However she will continue to live in Noctium as best as she can. Her interactions with Battler reminded her that despite everything, she has reasons to want to live after all, and it’s not exactly like she can atone for her sins if she no longer exists. But she will still continue to carry ambivalence and uncertainty about her identity and existence.

Regarding the sex-positive environment, Beato will be somewhat bewildered and overwhelmed, having come from a rather socially conservative environment, and not fitting into it as a girl who is transgender and bisexual, as well as having polyamorous attractions. It will take her a while to sort through her identity but the need for Synchrony, as well as the socially tolerant environment will help her to do so. Actually engaging romantically or sexually with others will be uncertain because of her marriage to Battler and not wanting to betray him, but is not out of the question, especially if a Battler arrives in Noctium.

Most of these struggles will remain hidden to most others though, as she is committed to maintaining her facade as the awesome and powerful witch Beatrice.

She will react with delight to the sheer vibrancy and variety of magical phenomena in the world, as well as all of the strange and fascinating people she can meet. Despite everything, she is still a curious girl who loves murder mysteries and fantasy, who writes over the top anime style magic battles for her games with Battler, who becomes interested in the occult because of her conversations with her cousin Maria. She easily gets excited about things she thinks are cool, and frankly the sheer presence of so many interesting things will play a large part in her choice to live on.

Condition upon arrival: Despite committing suicide after the Rokkenjima Massacre and existing on a higher plane as a witch, Beatrice exists in Noctium as a living human being, albeit one that can use magic. She is physically in fine health. Her mental and emotional state is described above.

      Abilities:

Magic: As a witch, Beatrice has the power of magic, although it is not nearly as powerful in Noctium. However magic has a special meaning in Umineko, and the When They Cry series generally, which deals frequently with alternate timelines and parallel worlds (or fragments). Magic in Umineko is heavily tied to imagination and storytelling in particular.

Essentially Beato’s magic as it manifests in Noctium is the ability to tell a story about the world and make it true. She tells an alternate narrative about events that have happened and makes that narrative “real.” To be clear, she is not actually altering history, but putting a new coat of paint on the present reality.

      Examples:
Beatrice wants to open a locked door. She tells the story that somebody forgot to lock the door in the first place, and it opens.
She wants to heal somebody who was injured. She says that the injury is less serious than it looks, and it is.
Beatrice wants to make somebody sick. She says that their lunch gave them food poisoning.

This magic comes with limitations, however.
It can only rewrite events that happened in the last few hours.
It can only replicate effects already achievable by human effort, ie opening a lock or treating a wound.
It is undone within a few hours of the spell being cast. An injury reverts to its previous severity, for example.
If somebody convincingly can argue that Beatrice’s “narrative” never happened, her magic is immediately undone.
      It requires Manna, obviously.
It is limited to a small, personal scope.
She cannot bring people back to life, unless medicine could already save them, and she cannot directly cause somebody to die or experience life-threatening illness or injury.

Illusions: As another face of her magic, Beato can create small visual illusions. She summons golden butterflies when she uses magic, creates illusory smoke instead of smoking her pipe, and can make small cosmetic changes. She cannot use magic alone to perfectly disguise herself.

Ideal Body: Beatrice’s body is not her original form, but rather a sort of spell generated by her existence as a Witch. She appears 19 in this form, but has an air of maturity that makes her seem older. When she has plenty of Manna, she has her idealized body as “Beatrice.” If her Manna is running low, or she’s in a situation where her powers are turned off, she will revert to her original body as “Sayo.” In this state she has neck length brown hair and a more androgynous appearance, and often looks tired and depressed. She appears to be about 16. Less obvious, in most cases, would be that she changes genotypical sex from female to male ( androgynous in features and build; she never went through male puberty), with what superficially appears to be female genitalia. In both forms she has a stylized tattoo of a one-winged eagle on her left thigh.

Inventory: Dress, kiseru pipe, wedding ring.

      Gembond: Ruby
Gem Location: Left thigh, in her one-winged eagle tattoo.
