[ Beatrice expertly maintains her calm in the face of the apparent??? Flirtation??? God, why does this keep happening? She knows perfectly well why she feels affection so easily, from a life of loneliness and self-loathing. It would be easier to deal with, if she didn't sense a kernel of genuine friendship there. ]
